ICSSR’s doctoral fellowship is the main alternative to UGC funding for social-science PhDs. You must be a full-time registered scholar at a recognised university, under 40 (with relaxation for reserved categories) and with at least 55% at the postgraduate level. The full-term fellowship pays ₹20,000 a month for two years with an annual contingency; a short-term six-month version also exists.
